[Always nearby you] Why I can see Pak Kung Temples so often during my hiking in this area?
Pak Kung Temple, also known as the Pak Fu Temple, is a small temple built by villagers to pray for road safety. Many villagers lived in Tai Lam Tsuen, Kwan Mun Tsuen and Tin Fu Tsai Tsuen (also known as west, central and east Pak Fu Au). So the residents built three temples of the same kind along the way from each village to ensure the safety of the villagers when they went to and return from the market.
Although all three temples are small, they all have their own characteristics. They are now located on Maclehose Trail Stage 10 and Tai Lam Nature Trail, all of which continue to protect the safety of mountain walkers.
Due to the rapid growth of Hong Kong’s population after the war, Hong Kong began to suffer from serious water shortage. The government began to build reservoirs in Tai Lam Chung valley. Tai Lam Chung Reservoir project started in 1952. Because of the need to build a dam, the residents of Tai Lam Tsuen, Kwan Mun Tsuen and Tin Fu Tsai Tsuen needed to be moved out. Some of the villagers were relocated to Tsuen Wan, where San Tsuen and Tai UK Street are today. The three Pak kung temples left behind are traces of their lives.
