[Feel so confused~] Kai Kung Shan or Kai Kung Leng?
“Viewed horizontally, it’s a ridge. Viewed on the side, it’s a peak. The height differs when looking near or from afar.” These are words from a poem of Su Shi. Hong Kong’s has its own version named “Kai Kung”, two mountains of similar name yet contrast greatly. One is called Kai Kung Shan, and the other is called Kai Kung Leng.
We first introduce Kai Kung Shan with an elevation of 399 metres, situated in Sai Kung. Its name is Kai Kung Shan, (Rooster Mountain translated directly from Cantonese) because the hills on the mountain take the form of a chicken’s crown. Kai Kung Shan is an essential thoroughfare of the third section of MacLehose Trail. Standing on the peak, you can admire a 360-degree view, facing east is Sai Kung West Country Park, Sharp Peak, Lui Ta Shek, Wa Mei Shan, Shek Uk Shan, Ngam Tau Shan, and Ngau Yee Shek Shan cluster of mountain ridges. Towards the south is Cheung Shan of Tsam Chuk Wan, Tai Tun Peak; westward is Sam Pui Chau and the sea; to the north is Pak Sin Leng and Shuen Wan.
As for Kai Kung Leng with an elevation of 585 metres, it lies on the north-western part of the New Territories. It is also known as Kwai Kwok Shan. From “Records of the Unity of the Great Qing” (an official chronicle compiled during the Qing period, and reflecting the geography of the Qing Dynasty), “Mountain full of old Chinese cinnamons, with two peaks confronting each other face to face, shaped like a horn and so how it is named.” Even ancient peers thought that parallel peaks resembled a chicken’s crown.
The open scenery at the top of Kai Kung Leng, overlooks Yuen Long, Kam Tin, Shek Kong and the cross-border area. It is also an excellent place to find Miscanthus, also known as feather grass. However, Kai Kung Leng is only suitable for experienced and well-prepared hikers. The long stretch of ridges has fluctuating elevations, no shade, and is difficult to hike.
From Kai Kung Shan, majestic views allow you to observe the sea and sky blend into one. The mountain of Kai Kung Leng oversees lush and beautiful countryside. However, both mountains are plagued with the same problem of severe soil erosion. Hikers not only need advanced hiking skills to conquer both rugged trails, but they also need to take special care of the mountain trials.
