Who is the person on the MacLehose Trail logo?
MacLehose Trail is the longest hiking trail in Hong Kong, stretching a total length of 100 kilometres. It runs through Hong Kong from Sai Kung in the east to Tuen Mun in the west. The trail was named after Sir MacLehose, the then Governor of Hong Kong and officially commissioned on October 26, 1979.
Famous Hong Kong sculptor Tong King Sum, (1940 – 2008), designed the MacLehose Trail logo. It is said, the design was inspired by the silhouette of Sir MacLehose, the 25th Governor of Hong Kong because he loved hiking. However, since a foreigner’s build is quite large, their profiles are less aesthetic. Later, the logo was revised smaller and more youthful, which was more appealing and energetic.
Taiwanese writer Teacher Liu Ke Xiang described the MacLehose Trail sign as: “Aesthetically beautiful. A depiction of a hiker wearing a rugged backpack, with stout legs, and one hand on his knee having just reached the summit. It’s as if resting and admiring the beautiful view in the distance.”
In the beginning, signs on the trails were hand engraved by workers of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, making each marker unique and special. It is possible to observe varying black silhouettes. Some are slender while others are broader or with differing size backpacks. Teacher Liu Ke Xiang loves to discover the different MacLehose Trail signs. How many different silhouettes have you spotted and recorded?
