What is the use of trigonometrical station?
An emerging trend among hiking enthusiasts is to “kill markers” — hikers photograph elevation pillars along ridges to savour their discovery.
Upon arriving at the summit of Shek O Peak, we suggest to cool down and relax at the observation platform. While you’re there, soak in the breathtaking panoramic views overlooking Shek O, Big Wave Bay, and Tung Lung Island. You can also find an “elevation pillar” at the peak.
A common misconception of “elevation pillars” is that they are used to mark the height of the mountain. That is incorrect. The official name for these elevation pillars are Trigonometrical Stations and were installed by the Geodetic Survey Unit of the Survey and Mapping Office, all over Hong Kong. They are used as map surveying referencing points, usually on scattered peaks but do not necessarily depict the summit of a mountain.
Trigonometrical Stations first appeared on maps of Hong Kong in 1845. As of May 2019, a network of 232 Trigonometrical Stations exist in Hong Kong.
By standing in front or near a trig station, an interview with surveyors stated, that hikers sometimes block construction workers from using the trig stations to take measurements. Hence it is advisable to stay clear of the trig stations after taking a photo. As a reminder, please do not graffiti the stations and help protect the essential pillars.
