Dragon’s Back =The best trail in Asia?
The Dragon’s Back is easily ranked as one of Hong Kong’s most famous mountain trails. Located on the route between Shek O Peak and Wan Cham Mountain, this section is inundated with ridges that resemble a wave motion similar to a dragon’s back. Hence the name “Dragon’s Back”.
Being the iconic hiking trail of Hong Kong, the Dragon’s Back possesses endless sea views and spectacular scenery. The easy-going route makes it appealing even for novice hikers. This hiking trail is also regularly recommended by the Hong Kong Tourism Board to foreign tourists to visit. Over the years, the Dragon’s Back has gained international tourism accolades including:
◎ “Best Urban Hiking Trail” in 2004 by the Time Magazine (Asia).
◎ “Hong Kong’s top five hiking trails for beginners” on the CNN Travel website.
◎ “One of Hong Kong’s best hiking trails” in the Lonely Planet’s travel guide.
Do high tourist numbers mean lots of litter? Unfortunately, this is true in Hong Kong’s countryside. It’s hard not to miss the scattered waste near hiking resting areas on the Dragon’s Back.
The Green Earth conducted a study in early 2019 and trekked through the top 12 popular local hiking trails. Along the way, they collected more than 4,500 pieces of rubbish in the countryside. The top three waste items were: food and plastic packaging, plastic bottles and tissue paper.
Since 2015 the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department has gradually removed rubbish bins in the area to promote a ““take your litters home”” campaign. Hikers should plan their trips and avoid bringing disposable items. If it is unavoidable, carry their waste back to the city for proper recycling or disposal. Never leave trash behind on the mountain.
Everyone can play a part to reduce garbage in the countryside. A reduction of waste can be achieved by changing typical habits such as bringing a water bottle, handkerchief and lunch box.
We don’t believe many tourists equates to lots of trash. We hope through continuous education and reminders, “ take your litters home” should be a matter of principle. So everyone can enjoy magnificent and pristine sceneries of the hiking trails.
