What is Fung Shui woodland?
走上古道,你會經過梅子林村。

三百多年前,客家人吳氏扶老攜幼來到馬鞍山,這海拔130米的山谷中,建立了「梅子林村」。不過,這裡並無梅的出產,村民以種禾為主,並兼以斬柴維生。

走到梅子林村,會發現村落三面靠山,而前面則是一片空地,這是客家人對於選址建村的傳統要求,認為三面靠山,前臨平原是「風水寶地」,再在後山上栽種果樹,建設「風水林」就能幫助抵擋颱風,調節氣溫並防止水土流失。
When you walk to Mui Tsz Lam village, you will find that the village is backed by mountains on three sides, and in front of it is an open space. This is the traditional requirement of the hakka people for choosing a site to build a village. They believed that the mountain with three sides and the plain in front is a “Fung Shui Treasure”. Planting fruit trees on the mountain in the back, building ‘Fung Shui Woodland’ can help to resist typhoons, regulate the temperature and prevent soil erosion.
「風水林」是嶺南地區特有的人文風景,因為昔日的人民的日常生活都是仰賴自然法則,所以對大自然都心存敬畏亦深信風水命理。香港大約有300多座「風水林」,而官方僅紀錄了當中的116座。而「風水林」除了可以舒緩不同季節的極端氣溫外,還有其經濟價值,村民還會自行種植果樹和有藥用價值的植物等等,這樣就能既有食物來源亦能確保用作建築及柴薪的木材有足夠的資源。同時「風水林」亦是為野生動物提供食物及棲息的地方。
“Fung shui Woodland” is a unique cultural landscape in the Ling Nan area. In the past, people all relied on the laws of nature in their daily life, so they held nature in awe and believed in fung Shui. There are more than 300 ‘Fung Shui Woodlands’, while only 116 of which are officially recorded. In addition to relieving the extreme temperatures in different seasons, “Fung shui Woodlands” also have economic value. Villagers also grow their own fruit trees and plants with medicinal value, so as to provide both food sources and wood for construction and firewood. “Fung shui Woodlands” also provide food and shelter for wildlife.
據2016年的報導,梅子林村只有50人居住,這山谷中過著恬靜的生活。
According to a report in 2016, only 50 people live in Mui Tsz Lam village, leading a quiet life in the valley.
這裡也是山徑自助導賞的終點,你可繼續沿路走到馬鞍山富安花園乘車離開。
