古時甚麼人走「古道」?
Who walked the ancient trail in the past?
舊時香港交通並不發達,居民為了連接村落與村落,村落與城鎮之間,徒步開辟出不少山路,以供居民交流和商業活動。居民在山徑來回,運送貨物,山路漸變成連接村落城鎮要道,演變成古道。
In the early days of Hong Kong, the transportation was not well developed and residents needed to travel to other villages, or to and from different markets to do business, all on foot. As a result, there are many walking trails were created by these residents. These trails played an important role in cultural communication and commercial activities in the past.
元荃古道顧名思義是連接元朗和荃灣的一條古道,昔日元朗十八鄉居民為了把農作物運往荃灣的市集,翻山越嶺走經大㰖(現時的大欖郊野公園),開辟出元荃古道。
According to Kwok Chibiu, a senior researcher on ancient trail, the ancient trail referred to today, was called road in Qing dynasty. Most of these are the main roads between villages and markets. They are made of stone, which are durable and convenient for visiting relatives, weddings, festivals and freight transportation.
昔日居民交易運貨以換取日常用品,送農作物禽畜騾仔,今時今日已經成為許多市民來郊遊觀景的元荃古道郊遊徑。
The name of ancient trail is usually combined with the names of the destinations at both ends. Yuen Tsuen Ancient Trail used to be a communication route between Yuen Long and Tsuen Wan, so called ‘Yuen’ ‘Tsuen’ ancient trail, which was created by former residents of 18 township in Yuen Long who crossed the mountains through he Tai Lam (currently Tai Lam Country Park), in order to transport the crops to Tsuen Wan market, in exchange for their daily necessities.
