What are the functions of the ball-like structures at the mountain top?
There are several “balls” on the top of Tai Mo Shan, which is the landmark of it. Tai Mo Shan is the peak of Hong Kong. In colonial times, the British army built a radar station here for military purposes. Later, it was converted into the observatory weather radar station and civil aviation department radar as seen today.
The Tai Mo Shan Weather Radar Station, which stands at Hong Kong’s highest peak, was equipped in 1999 with a highly efficient new antenna and transmitter to monitor inclement weather.Combined with data from the Tate’s Cairn Radar Station, the observatory was able to compile synthetic radar images.
The Tai Mo Shan radar can also display the storm structure in stereo and calculate the wind and direction at different heights in Hong Kong. The radar operation is highly automated and can be monitored remotely by controllers at the observatory headquarters.
