The general public in Hong Kong loves visiting country trails,
however, the frequent visits may accelerate soil erosion of nature trails.
The Green Earth launched the
“ECF Make Our Nature Trails Sustainable – Leave No Trace Education Programme”
in Aug 2018. Though public engagement activities,
we promote the sustainable use and management of hiking trails.
With the increase in intensity of usage of trails,
some of the popular trails degrade quicker than before.
From August 2018, The Green Earth has organized a series of public education activities to promote the concept of sustainable use and management of hiking trails, and to strengthen public awareness in nature conservation so as to reduce impacts to country trails during their visits and maintain the natural beauty of the trails.
To explore the beauty of nature trails in Hong Kong
To understand the underlying cause of the accelerated deterioration and erosion of hiking trails, the state of hiking trails and the challenge in managing trail use
To foster the care of natural environment, and avoid any behavior that cause negative impact to the trails and countryside environment
To engage volunteers in supporting simple trail maintenance to relieve soil erosion of nature trails
“Leave No Trace” (LNT) advocates minimum impact practices for anyone visiting the outdoors. Based on the LNT principles, we have developed some local actions to preserve the nature trails.
